Giving Thanks

We all have different ways to celebrate Thanksgiving. I gather with my whole family and later head over to my husband’s family get-together. (Boy, have I had to learn portion control!) A friend of mine was spending this year away from family, opening her home to a woman from an assisted care home and her out-of-town daughter. Another friend wasn’t celebrating until Friday with her family, so she had planned a day of personal growth projects.

In each of these different ways, we were celebrating some of what we have to be thankful for. Family, abundance, being able to help others, personal freedom, opportunities to make dreams a reality. And we have so much more to be grateful for.

And with so much, one day isn’t enough. So let’s practice Thanksgiving every day. Not the turkey and pumpkin pie part (we can’t afford that many calories every day!), but the gratitude part. The “let’s thank God” part. Every day, for every thing. Thank God for the good and the bad. Thank God for the the highs and the lows. Because God uses every single thing that happens in our lives for our good, if we love Him and are following His will.

So happy Thanksgiving 4, everyone! Thank God for this day, whatever is happening, and thank Him again tomorrow on Thanksgiving 5. And maybe have that piece of pumpkin pie every now and again, just as a reminder of the original day.
